BILBERRIES – the real Nordic superfood (smoothie recipe)

Nordic bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) are packed with nutrients and finally, it's the time of the year, when these super berries are starting to ripen.

We love these little blue superheroes because they are rich in nutrients and vitamins. Bilberries and other Nordic berries grow and survive in the harsh and cold weather, and that’s why they contain so many nutrients. Nordic berries like bilberry, lingonberry and sea buckthorn have been used for centuries as a folk medicine in the Nordic countries and they are said to have plenty of health benefits.

The best thing is that bilberry is healthy but tastes so good and fresh! Bilberries like other Nordic berries have plenty of health benefits – so bilberries are definitely natures’ own superfood and a treat. Those tiny berries can be used on top of the porridge or yogurt, in pie and pastries, and in smoothies. Do you know anyone who doesn’t like bilberries in any form?

Bilberries contribute to health

It’s studied that bilberries may reduce inflammation, which contributes to health risks and diseases. Bilberries are also kept helpful for better memory and vision. They are also said to help to reduce blood pressure and they contribute to your digestion due to their high fiber content. Here’s why we love these little blue berries:

  • Bilberries contain plenty of vitamins like vitamin C, E, and B.
  • They are packed with antioxidants. The number of antioxidants in bilberries is much higher than in normal blueberries, fruits, and vegetables.
  • They contain healthful polyphenols, which benefit your health in multiple ways.
  • Anthocyanins are the most potent polyphenols in bilberries.
  • Bilberries are also a great source of fiber!

But what is the difference between bilberries and garden blueberries? Bilberries that grows wild mainly in the arctic regions are smaller and have darker blue or purple color inside than the cultivated blueberry, that’s due to its high anthocyanin content. Bilberries are usually less juicy and said to contain more nutrients and antioxidants than cultivated ones – also because they need to survive from the long winter.

How much bilberries should you eat to get the health benefits?

You can eat them as much as you want, although at least a couple deciliters are recommended daily. 1 dl is a good start, it contains e.g. 2 grams of fiber, which is approximately 8% of the recommended daily intake. You should get at least 25g fiber daily.
