An Interview with Athlete Tuija Hyyrynen
Professional athlete Tuija Hyyrynen, is a football player for Juventus. The Turin, Italy, based club, although founded in 1897, only started the women’s division in 2017. These female footballers have competed in the Serie A, the topflight of national football, since their debut season.
“Together with my club team, we are aiming for the fourth consecutive Italian Serie A Championship and Victory in the Italian Cup,” says the Finnish-born, 34-year-old athlete, who is also a member of the Finnish national team. “It's my fifth year living in beautiful Italy. Before that, I spent years living in the USA, Sweden, and Denmark--always following my passion of football!”
Tuija started playing, as a 10-year-old girl. Her interest in the sport developed, when her sister first started playing football. “I quickly fell in love with the game, and the fact that it is a team sport, where you work together towards your goals.”
Always interested in health and wellness, Tuija studied her Masters of Sports Science degree, while playing in Sweden, Umeå. Staying in shape as a football champion requires a highly demanding training schedule with the team. “I have football training every day, which includes going to the gym and running, along with a football game or two every week. I also do a lot of mobility and recovery training with bike riding and using a foam roller,” she explains.
“For me it is all about finding the balance between pushing myself to the limits, and making sure my body and mind recovers, in between the sessions.” Then she adds, “ In football circles, there is a perception that basic, healthy, and varied home cooking is enough to keep performance high, and that no supplement other than vitamin D is needed. However, in my case, I am very happy that superfood supplements and vitamins found me.”
Tuija says she discovered the Aarja Health product line over a year ago, and she really feels the positive effects that it has on her everyday life. Before this she admits, “To be honest, I was really struggling when I moved to Italy, because of the extreme hot weather, and the very demanding schedule. I would get cramps. I would get dehydrated. Tuija advises everyone on a fitness journey, from novices to professional athletes to listen to their bodies. “Ask yourself questions like, ‘How do I feel?’ and ‘What is it that I need?’ Maybe you are tired or need of more healthy food, fresh air, or meditation. Figure out what is right for you and then act. These small daily choices add up in the long run, and make all the difference.” Then she sums up her thoughts by adding, “For me being an athlete is a lifestyle, where you make healthy choices 24/7 to perform at your best.”
Currently, Tuija is working toward the European Championship, with the Finnish national team, which will take place this summer 2022.
